I started meditating in 2017, when the stress of my every day life was beyond my capacity to cope with. I had been listening to a lot of Abraham Hicks and they insisted that to meditate all you had to do was stop thinking for a little while. I had taken a meditation class a few years earlier that had a much more rigid and precise approach to the practice, which I hadn’t been able to adopt on my own.
Unable to process anymore direction or critique, I used the “just stop thinking” method. It worked for me. After my body had released some of its tension – enough that I could sit still without any itching or nervous impules to move or adjust – I dropped into a state of deep relaxation. I was finally behind my own mind, observing it without any attachment to its contents.
Over the succeeding months as I meditated every day, I began to experience elaborate light shows and metaphoric visions. This painting recalls those early experiences with meditation, watching the purple lights come into view and slowly morph into brighter colors.

Intro
Aloha, I’m Aubrey, an artist exploring the wild west of consciousness and California, capturing the beauty I find in oil paintings.
I grew up in San Diego but I’m a wanderer so I’ve also lived in Boston, Paris, Salt Lake City, Denver, South Lake Tahoe, Lunenburg, Somerset, Colfax, the Big Island of Hawaii, and Nevada City, leaving pieces of my soul in each place.
I’m still traveling, collecting memories and soaking up all the living color I can find. I paint from life and from memory – not what others may see, but what I feel.
My Process
I use natural earth pigments and walnut oil to mix my own oil paints by hand, like the Old Masters did. It’s a time-consuming process but I enjoy knowing all the ingredients in my paint are biodegradable and not too far away from nature.
Some of my paintings are alla prima and completed in a single session. Others have two or three or more layers, each one dried and sometimes sanded before another is applied. The texture of these pieces is as unique as the finished composition.
Each painting is one-of-a-kind, imbued with my take on beauty and meant to be a transportive experience for the viewer.

Paintings arrive wrapped in paper and nestled inside a custom fit box. Please allow up to 7 days for your painting to ship.
Prints arrive flat, secured to matte board with photo corners and protected with tissue paper.
